Chapter Thirteen

ECHO

Echo spends her day trying not to think about River resting with Clover in the hut she once called home. She brings fresh water to those with the scurge. Empties their bedpans. Cuts up their food so it can be eaten without teeth.

And while all of this helps those in need, it does absolutely nothing to stop her mind straying to that set of green eyes. The longing to be with River grows with each moment that passes. She misses him with a pain that aches deep in her chest.

There’s no sign of River or Clover the entire day. Even Chase and Flora seem to have gone missing, either asleep inside the hut they’re now being forced to share or hiding somewhere else. Echo had been the only one out of the five of them to have any sleep the night before, even if it had been sitting up in Nola’s chair.

When the afternoon sun starts its trek to the horizon, Echo finds herself walking toward Makk’s house. Her curiosity about his mysterious mother hasn’t waned since Makk promised to introduce them. And she may as well do something useful with her time while she waits for the others to regain their energy, which realistically may not be for a while. With any luck, Clover will feel the need to rest for several days before she’s ready to save the world.

Shaking the cynicism from her mind, Echo continues on, trying to convince herself this is a good idea. She never got the chance to tell River about her suspicions, which is hopefully a good thing. She can either rule Makk’s mom in or out as River’s missing mother without risking getting his hopes up then dashing them.

Maybe she’s just making this whole thing up in her head? But there’s no denying those green eyes shared by Makk, River and Flora are unmistakably the same. Oren’s eyes are blue, which isn’t all that different, although somehow, they seem worlds apart, given they’re the window to such evil thoughts. It’s strange how the soul contained behind a set of eyes can completely change how they look—kind, menacing, greedy, curious, or desperate.

Echo has no doubt how her eyes look right now.

Sad.

Which she needs to blink away pretty quickly if she’s going to continue to work with River, Chase and Flora to find the Sovereign Code and ensure Immunity is given to all. There’s a lot more at stake here than her catastrophic love life.

Reaching the end of the street, Echo approaches Makk’s house, remembering the last time she’d come here and left via a very different exit. The fact that his mom has even had to build such an exit is interesting all on its own. What emergency was she expecting to have to escape from in such a hurry?

She knocks on the solid frame of the door and waits, listening for Makk’s incessant chatter inside. All is quiet, so she knocks again.

“Makk!” she calls. “It’s Echo. Are you in there?”

There’s a small thump inside and Echo listens harder.
